Combining standard telecomm signals with uncompressed video transport has
never been easier than with the MD-003 series from Media Links. With the MD-003
STM-1 TX and STM-1 RX, both SONET and SDH signals can easily be transported alongside a variety of video
formats. Through the use of optical Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM), multiple signals can be
combined onto a single fiber with no interdependency, and each will arrive intact at the far end of the link
because of forward error correction on every circuit.
Many popular video, audio, voice and data multiplexers have SDH/SONET
STM-1/OC3 interfaces, which can all interface directly to both the MD-003 SMT-1 TX and RX units.
Complete, full bandwidth transparency of the transport link ensures that all protocols embedded within the
STM-1/OC3 frame structure can be transported, including ATM, Packet over SONET and Frame Relay. At the far
end of the circuit, connections can be made to other multiplexing equipment or directly to local and long-haul
circuits provided by carriers.
Both unidirectional and bidirectional circuits can be constructed with these units. One-way transport is often useful for compressed video and program audio applications. Two-way circuits can be
constructed by using a transmitter and receiver module at each end of the circuit and employing one wavelength
for each direction of transport.
Two different frames have been designed for MD-003 series transport modules to offer tremendous scalability:
The 3RU provides 16 module slots in a variety of WDM configurations, including 16:1, dual 8:1,
quad 4:1 and 16 individual fibers.
The 1RU shelf provides two optical module slots, along with two slots that can be used for the wide
range of MD2000 video processing and compression modules, including the HD270Coax, HD-GigE,
up and down converters, A/D and D/A converters, audio embedders, frame synchronizers, and a
constantly evolving list of new functions.
In addition to the STM-1 TX/RX modules, the MD-003 series includes a 4-channel Ethernet transmitter/
receiver along with a universal video interface card that supports HD-SDI, SD-SDI, SDTI and DVB/ASI
video signals.
